The Poem of the Week: David Shapiro's "I Loved You Once By Pushkin"

An obvious choice for today's holiday, from his Overlook Press collection A Burning Interior. Happy Valentine's Day.--Jim

I Loved You Once By Pushkin

I wish I had a copy
of Pushkin's poem
"I loved you once"
which is said to achieve
the intended effect-
"wistful resignation
half-concealing half-
revealing a still
smoldering passion."
"without having recourse
to figures of speech."
O it would be clear to you then
there could be such a thing--
I would leave you a copy.

i loved this! Here's the Pushkin:

I loved you once, nor can this heart be quiet;
For it would seem that love still lingers there;
But do not you be further troubled by it;
I would in no wise hurt you, oh, my dear.

I loved you without hope, a mute offender;
What jealous pangs, what shy despairs I knew!
A love as deep as this, as true, as tender,
God grant another may yet offer you.
