NYC Elephant Walk 2006
Next Tuesday, March 21st is New York City's annual march of the elephants from Queens into Manhattan and over to Madison Square Garden--actually, it's Monday night just after midnight, so technically Tuesday. It's also the namesake of our blog, kind of... Other competing theories include the Lawrence Welk song "Baby Elephant Walk," or a Cambodian restaurant in the suburbs of Boston.
I've never gone to watch one of these things. For some reason Monday, midnight and midtown just don't sound like my cup of tea. Add to that freezing temperatures and crowded sidewalks with equal parts cranky children, pushy parents, and animal rights activists, and, well, you get the picture. And what about the possibility of a rampage?

ahh you should go-
it's not that bad really- the streets aren't as crowed as you may think and there's hardly any children there at all. Now the cold, I can't do anything about- and the protesters are camped out just outside the garden, not all over the streets-
it's a sight to be seen in person!
not to nitpick, but i am. the elephant walk is actually right in boston. very close to fenway.
Thanks Sam, I stand corrected. Jim's our resident Boston expert, I should have consulted him. All I have is memories of watching Lawrence Welk at my grandparents' house on Saturday nights. During Baby Elephant Walk they'd put this cheap little plastic elephant bubble blower on top of the organ or the piano or whatever and would keep zooming in on it and making psychedelic effects on the bubbles. I don't know if the show had some sort of psychotropic reaction with the geritol or what, but the grandparents sure did love it.
And we'll see on checking out the elephant walk in person. I have a feeling the weather will be the determining factor there...
