GIFT GUIDE GIVEAWAY: For the uncle who collects retro horror flicks, reads all the classics on his kindle, and adores his Doberman mix pup

Welcome to the second week of Overlook’s Gift Guide Giveaway! We know that finding the perfect gift for your loved ones can be stressful and intimidating. What do you get the father/sister/boyfriend/coworker (etc.) that has everything? Here at Overlook, we firmly believe that there is a book meant for everyone out there—no matter their age, literary persuasions, talents or hobbies—and that your holiday time should be spent with the people you love, not a mob of strangers at the mall. Books are truly the perfect gift. And while publicist Michael Goldsmith already gave you advice for gifting to the littles in your life, today we tackle a tough-to-crack male specimen with fellow publicist Theresa Collier.

My uncle is notoriously difficult to shop for. It is inevitable that once the holiday season comes around, my family will be vying for the best gift, plying my aunt for information in hushed tones over phone calls or at the dinner table. To the victor goes the spoils—perhaps his latest movie obsession just out on DVD, or some new appendage for his ipad—and to the losers goes…well, usually a random gift card and some white chocolate (lame, I know).

This year, I skipped the faceoff with my family, and turned to Overlook ‘s bookshelves for inspiration, instead. Here is what I came up with:

PSYCHO by Robert Bloch
Any horror movie fanatic should already have this groundbreaking Alfred Hitchcock film stashed in their collection, but have they read the novel that inspired the infamous shower scream? Robert Bloch’s 1958 stunner captivated a nation; The New York Times called it “icily terrifying” and Peter Straub hailed Bloch “one of the all-time masters.” My uncle has box sets full of Hitchcock’s films, so it’s only natural that Bloch’s novel should grace his bookshelf, too.

THE CHRISTMAS BOOKS by Charles Dickens
Anyone with an e-reader can easily download most classics for free. My uncle is a devout fan of Mark Twain and Charles Dickens, and while it might be nice for some to save shelf space, you can’t go wrong with a beautiful collector’s edition, especially these handsome Dickens tomes. A world-famous Nonesuch Press edition bound in leather and linen, and perfect for the impending holiday, THE CHRISTMAS BOOKS includes “A Christmas Carol," "The Chimes," "The Cricket on the Hearth," "The Battle of Life," and "The Haunted Man."

What man doesn’t love his canine best friend? In Mark Derr’s popular history, he delves into this age-old relationship and posits that the dog was an evolutionary inevitability in the nature of the wolf and its human soul mate. For anyone whose dog gets to sleep in their bed, or who won’t leave home without their pups, this compelling book is an essential read.
