Listen to the podcast SF Gate's Mick Lasalle about 15 minutes in to hear him discuss Antonia Quirke's essay from
Choking on Marlon Brando about the greatness of Keanu and the overratedness of Johnny Depp. Let your voice be heard at the poll on the right.

It's clear to me the woman on your show has not watched any of Keanu's movies post 2001. He is an extremely talented actor who has come a very long way since Dracula and some, like your guest, are stuck in his Ted meets Point Break era. See his movies (The Gift, Scanner Darkly, even Rivers Edge) before you pass judgment.
Compared to One-Genre-Depp, Keanu is a rare Hollywood find who has yet to shake off the critic attacks of the late 80's, but will hopefully soon prove that people, like your guest, will someday be forced to eat their words.
Thank you.
Patricia
We here at the Overlook Press don't really have a show, but in listening to Mr. Lasalle's podcast we now appreciate that there are strong opinions on both sides. And that what seemed initially obvious (Depp's chops) might be a little more complicated by the very uncomplicated screen presence of Mr. Reeves. Who will eat their words? Who can say?
Keanu's role in A Scanner Darkly was pretty much to act stoned and paranoid. All it takes to do that is to get a little high and have someone make you look all cartoony.
At least there are a few out there who "get" Keanu Reeves, I applaud Lasalle and that author for breaking from the critics who can't think outside the box they seem to be trapped in.
As for that lady who hates Reeves and won't see his movies, you don't sound too bright to begin with. What kind of critic doesn't see movies? Sounds more like a personal attack on Mr. Reeves.
to the poster about scanner, you are clueless.
Keanu Reeves may be underrated, but Johnny Depp is by no means a "one note." Watch POTC and Secret Window back to back and then try to say he is a "one note." Depp is much more risky in his choice of roles and is unaffected by what Hollywood would like him too do, something Reeves is unfortunately incapable of doing. Depp has been true to his roots. Perhaps you should watch more of his movies before declaring him a one note.
actaully keanu reeves is by far a better actor than Depp. look at his movies and the talk about him, not just one or two but most. I have seen Keanu reeves in a more variety of movies than Depp. Actually i cant remember the last time i saw him on a actually good show. Nearly all the good shows i watch has Keanu Reeves in it. I think he is very talented.
keanu is the best.i love him
dude all of yall are stupid...johnny depp is the best actor out there.. he has played alot of important roles in mostly all of his movies..he really only likes to do films that have to do with history..and keanu reeves over here trying to make future shit..that doesnt even make sense..i mean, i like him and everything but i love johnny depp because he is so cool..and none of yall have ever seen any of his movies if you dont think highly of him...!!!! so just shut the fuck up already
Who honestly cares?
Keanu is a second rate actor at best; he cannot even perform Shakespeare so the audiences will understand it. But, don't get me wrong, I still like him. I just don't blow him up to be something he's not.
Johnny is talented, but unfortunately has not expanded his abilities to be listed amongst the true greats. Again, I love him too, and he is far more talented that Keanu. That's just life.
Actually, the title man of the essay, Marlon Brando, is more talented than both of them combined. Brando did everything once, and brilliantly. What other actor can make such a claim?
To me, Keanu Reeves is NOTHING compared to Johnny Depp. He is an amazing actor with a cameleon style in roles.
Bitches Keanu Reeves is the best, he is gorgeous. I love Johnnny Depp don't get me wrong, but to me Keanu Reeves will always be my #1. Damn they are both fine as hell. Peace
