Each day we have carefully selected books for themed gift packs we thought were unique and memorable and happily sent them off one by one to loving new owners. It was fun playing Santa while it lasted. On this 12th Day of Christmas, we happily pass the Santa Hat to you; today's winner gets to choose their own gift!

Overlook Press proudly publishes numerous author collections and we want you to take home a trio from your favorite writer. The lucky winner may select among the following:

Her bestselling romantic masterpieces are steeped in drama, mystery, and intrigue which keep her loyal fans coming back for more time and time again. We are offering: No Angel, Almost a Crime, and an advance copy of her January release Another Woman.

P.G. Wodehouse is a reliable master of social satire lauded worldwide as one of the greatest comedic writers of the twentieth century. With a literary career spanning seventy years, his charming British wit and distinctive characters continue to stand the test of time. Overlook has revived the comic genius in The Collector's Wodehouse, a handsome one-of-a-kind collection printed on Scottish cream-wove, acid-free paper, and sewn and bound in full cloth. We are offering: The Old Reliable, Plum Pie, and Love Among Chickens.

Walter R. Brooks is the author of twenty-six stories in the beloved Freddy the Pig series which has enchanted children for generations. First published in 1927 and 1957, these children's classics starring Freddy and his Bean Farm animals friends have been newly packaged in collectable paperbacks for a new generation of readers. We are offering: Freddy the Detective, Freddy the Politician and Freddy the Magician.

We are offering: The Various Haunts of Men, The Shadows in the Street, and The Risk of Darkness.

So what do you say, shall we put the non-rhyming, nonsensical, too-many-syllable song together from the top? On second thought, we trust you all have memories like an elephant. Thanks for all the wonderful comments and interest in Overlook Press books over the past year. We have lots of exciting things planned for 2012 and look forward to sharing with you. On the eleventh day of Christmas, Overlook Press gave to me …

“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas just like the ones I used to know. Where the tree tops glisten, and children listen to hear sleigh bells in the snow.” – “White Christmas” by Irving Berlin

Between this week’s unseasonal warmth in the New York metro area and an unfavorable outlook for snow over the holiday weekend, it seems unlikely that any NYC-based Overlookers will be enjoying a white Christmas this year. After last December’s onslaught of extreme winter weather we’ll be grateful to skip the endless shoveling and travel delays, but as the days slowly begin to grow longer after last night’s winter solstice, we’re all secretly craving Central Park sledding and snowball fights.

Whatever the weather may bring this weekend, the 12 Days of Overlook Christmas must go on. With only two days of literary gift-giving remaining, we’ve already handed out ten prize packs containing sets of books by Charles Portis, Milton Glaser, Eva Zeisel, Kate Colquhoun, Carrie Hagen, Peter Quinn, John Avlon, Jesse Angelo, Errol Louis, Juan Luis Cebrián, Alan Cowell, Robert Forbes, Walter Brooks, Paul Lichter, King Adz, Allan Tannenbaum, Mervyn Peake, Maeve Gilmore, Charles Dickens, David Bercuson, Holger Herwig, P.G. Wodehouse, Eoin Colfer, Jim Nisbet, and Charles McCarry (whew). Today we add to that esteemed list one of our most cherished writers of crime fiction and noir, R.J. Ellory, whose three previous Overlook novels A Quiet Belief in Angels, The Anniversary Man, and A Simple Act of Violence, as well as his forthcoming A Quiet Vendetta will all be given away to one lucky winner. Congratulations to Petite, who nabbed yesterday’s suspense and comic noir compilation, and remember to continue sending comments and tweets to enter today’s contest.

What do a kidnapped governor’s daughter, a secret government cover-up, a serial killer from New Jersey, and a group of adolescent vigilante guardians have in common? They’re all subjects found between the pages of R.J. Ellory’s award winning mysteries and thrillers. Of Ellory’s work, commercial heavyweight James Patterson said, “There aren’t nearly enough beautifully written novels that are also great mysteries. Like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Smilla’s Sense of Snow, A Quiet Belief in Angels is one of them.” If you’re looking for something to do this weekend besides open gifts, skip the Fincher flick and cozy up to one of Ellory’s psychological page turners.

A Quiet Vendetta (coming in 2012) begins with a seemingly straightforward crime: the New Orleans kidnapping of Catherine Ducane. The police quickly react, expecting the usual demands of a ransom for her recovery, but when the mutilated remains of her bodyguard are discovered and her kidnapper finally calls, it’s not money he’s asking for, but instead a private audience to tell the shocking story of his own dark past. Ringing with truth and containing an epic history of the Italian mafia in America, it’s a must have for mystery fans.

A Simple Act of Violence is a panoramic novel about the covert activities of the CIA during the war in Nicaragua, the illegal trafficking of cocaine from Managua to Miami in CIA-chartered aircrafts, and the activities of known criminals given carte blanche and exemption from prosecution by the US intelligence community—all set against the backdrop of contemporary Washington. Perfect for the conspiracy theory enthusiast.

A riveting thriller set in New York City, The Anniversary Man may well be the ultimate serial killer novel, chronicling the case of a deranged but highly intelligent murderer who kills on the anniversary dates of famous crimes from the past. A mesmerizing mystery and an ideal gift for fans of the serial killer thriller.

Set in the small, rural community of Augusta Falls, Georgia A Quiet Belief in Angels tells the story of twelve-year-old Joseph Vaughan as he learns of the brutal assault and murder of a young girl—a classmate he knew better than anyone else and quietly loved. The murder is the first in a series of killings that plague his community over the next decade. Compelled by fear and duty, Joesph gather a group of friends to form “The Guardians,” who vow to watch over the young girls of Augusta Falls. But the murderer evades them and they watch helplessly as one child after another is taken.

On the tenth day of Christmas, Overlook Press gave to me...

For the last nine days, we have been wrapped up in holiday gift-giving of the literary variety--the very best kind, in our opinion. Shall we recap? With three days left to go in our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, we've already featured a number of themed prize packs from our extensive Overlook library, including: Charles Portis, design, mystery and true crime, journalism, YA, gift books, Mervyn Peake, Christmas, and P.G. Wodehouse. Congrats to yesterday's winner, Antigoni (Andy)! There are still three chances to win; keep the tweets and comments coming.

After more than a week of hand-picking presents for our wonderful readers, we received a sweet little surprise of our own last night: Overlook elephant cookies! With purple sprinkles! Cookies and books: there really is no better way to an Overlooker's heart. Thanks, Kate! We were lucky to snap a picture before the last one was gobbled up this morning.

Fueled by sprinkles and icing, we are excited to present Day 10 of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway which brings you heart-pounding, hand-wringing suspense from Nisbet, McCarry and Colfer, oh my! If the Winter of 2012 in New York City is anything like its predecessor, we can't think of a better way to stave off the winter blues than to escape into a world of spies, fugitives, and...hair plugs? With plot twists, thrills, and a dose of good humor on every page, we promise you won't notice an MTA meltdown or the three feet of snow barring you from civilization this season. You'll be too busy thanking your lucky stars for being snowed in with these masters of suspense and comic noir.

Shelley's Heart by master storyteller Charles McCarry is a spectacular novel surrounding a twenty-first century presidential election gone awry. On the eve of the Inauguration, the defeated candidate presents the incumbent president with proof of computer fraud to no avail; the president elect takes the oath of office despite dire consequences that threaten to destroy him, his party, and the Constitution. Two lifelong friends turn bitter political rivals in this tale of love, murder, and conspiracy expertly capturing the calculating and treacherous forces at play in American politics.

In the international bestseller Dark Companion, Jim Nisbet perfectly captures the weirdness of American suburbia in a story of seedy neighbors, crime, politics, cosmology, and physics. When the tenuous relationship between a levelheaded scientist and his drug-dealing neighbor takes a dubious turn, Banerjhee Rolf finds himself a fugitive from justice. If you are a lover of American Noir, you can't miss this masterpiece of the genre.

Plugged by Eoin Colfer tells the story of Daniel McEvoy, an Irish bouncer who works at a shady New Jersey club. When the woman Dan loves is murdered followed by those closest to him, he finds himself running from the cops, the mob, and an unstable lovesick neighbor. His only evidence points to a doctor who gave him hair transplants and then mysteriously disappeared. With the help of an unlikely cast of characters, Dan perseveres in this hilarious tour de force thriller of head-spinning plots and twists.

On the ninth day of Christmas, Overlook Press gave to me …

With only four installments in the ongoing 12 Days of Overlook Christmas giveaway remaining, you may be asking yourselves what tricks we could possibly still have up our sleeves for these final days of literary gift-giving. With eight days of previous giveaways under our belts, we have already handed out a portable Portis paperback collection, a trio of illustrated designer tomes, a set of hair-raising historical mysteries, three scoops for journalism junkies, classic and contemporary kid-lit, visual volumes for the holidays, a menagerie of Mervyn Peake stories, and a Dickens-inspired Christmas compendium, but we have saved one of our perennial favorite stocking-stuffers for today’s lucky winner. Congratulations to Elisabeth Hilverda, who took home yesterday’s tinsel-themed prize pack, and make sure to continue sending us Facebook comments and tweets if you want to cash in on today’s special gift!

Although this holiday giveaway has been focused on the 12 Days of Overlook Christmas, December brings a bevy of holiday celebrations that we would be remiss to ignore. Tonight at sundown begins Hanukkah, AKA the festival of lights. During the eight days of Hanukkah, menorahs the world over will be lit to commemorate the ancient miracle in which one day’s supply of oil burned for eight nights. Dreidels will be spun, latkes will be consumed, and Adam Sandler songs and movies will be looped on repeat. To celebrate the first night of Hanukkah (as well as the ninth day of our Overlook Christmas), today we are giving away two of the most recent additions to our Collector’s Wodehouse series, as well as two forthcoming sneak peeks to be released in 2012: Mike at Wrykyn, The Adventures of Sally, The Gold Bat, and Love Among the Chickens.

The late Christopher Hitchens called P.G. Wodehouse “the gold standard of English wit,” and shared a deep love and passion for PGW with writers including Stephen Fry and Evelyn Waugh. At Overlook, we publish more than eighty books in our Collector’s Wodehouse series (at one book per day, that’s more than eight Hanukkah’s worth) and share in their deep respect and admiration for Wodehouse’s brand of bubbling British humor.

In Mike at Wrykyn (coming April 2012), Wodehouse evokes the peaceful, prosperous world of middle-class England before the Great War, a place where rich men hire private cricket professionals to coach their sons at home, and little seems to matter at school except the publishing of team lists and the taking of tea. The Adventures of Sally (2012) is a transatlantic comedy set in worlds Wodehouse knew well: American theaters, English country houses, and the theatrical boardinghouses where young men and women dream of finding fame and fortune. These two advance releases make the perfect gift for the Wodehouse novice, or for those who only know him through Blandings and Picadilly.

Love Among the Chickens is the tale of Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge, one of Wodehouse’s favorite protagonists, and his fraught attempt to establish a business farming chickens on the coast of Dorset. Set in English public school in the years before World War I, The Gold Bat tells the story of O’Hara and Moriarty, two boys at Wrykyn School, who tar and feather the statue of a pompous local politician, and mislay at the scene of their crime a tiny god bat. A gentle early comedy, which should delight Wodehouse diehards and new readers alike.

On the eighth day of Christmas, Overlook Press gave to me...

Today is an exciting day at Overlook. Not only is it Day 8 of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, but this evening is our Holiday office party! We've all been hard at work wrapping things up before the Swarovski-studded ball drops, and in a few days we'll go our separate ways--hitting the road, rails, or sky--to celebrate with our own families and friends. But tonight we're excited to take pause and toast the successes we've enjoyed this year and to look forward to all 2012 has to bring, together.

The cookies have been baked and sugared, our Greek feast is being prepped as we speak, and the champagne is chilling. It seems there is not much else to do but give out our presents--to you, our faithful readers and fans. We wouldn't be here without you and are thrilled to continue to share with you our library of favorites in this season of giving. We have seven days of gift-giving under our holidays belts so far, with prizes including: a comprehensive collection of Charles Portis novels, design compendiums from Eva Zeisel and Milton Glaser, true crime and mystery powerhouses, a journalism trifecta, classic YA reads, a stunning trio of gift books, and illustrated Mervyn Peake masterpieces. A big Congrats and Happy Holidays to Friday's winner, Jordan Barber. We're well on our way to that partridge in a pear tree, but not just yet.

In keeping with the abounding Christmas spirit in the office today, we've decided to give away three classic Christmas reads that are sure to bolster your holiday cheer. And yes, this still includes those of you who checked out after the tenth day of 24/7 carols on the radio.

The Christmas Books is the elegant world-famous Nonesuch Press edition of Charles Dickens' holiday stories first published in 1937 and available again from the Overlook Press. It includes the classic A Christmas Carol released to the public this day in 1843 and his subsequent holiday books: The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life, and The Haunted Man. This leather and linen bound collector's edition includes the final texts of Dickens as well as illustrations he personally selected to compliment his words.

One Christmas in Washington by David Bercuson and Holger Herwig is the fascinating account of one of the most crucial moments in modern history: the weeks between December 1941 and January 1942, when Churchill and Roosevelt were together in the White House, forging what turned out to be the war-winning Grand Alliance. Written by two respected authorities on military history, this powerful story of two men rising above their personal differences for the sake of the greater good will keep you turning the pages well into your holiday evening.

The Great American Christmas Book is a charming collection of holiday games, recipes, carols, stories and much more from the American yesteryear. Complete with lavish illustrations and fun facts, this book will keep you entertained and in good cheer throughout the holiday season.

Good Luck! You can enter to win in three different ways.

On the seventh day of Christmas, Overlook Press gave to me …

TGIF! Sure we’re happy that today is Friday, but more importantly, today’s “F” stands for “FREE” (as in thank god for free books). We’ve been busier than elves these past few days, selecting books, t-shirts, and posters for our ongoing Twelve Days of Overlook Christmas giveaway. Since we kicked off the festivities last week we’ve already bequeathed Portis paperbacks, designer art tomes, true crime thrillers, journalism anthologies, kid lit classics, and coffee table gift sets to six lucky fans. Congratulations to our most recent winners, My Friend Amy and Jarrett Rush. We’ll be carrying on the yuletide cheer all next week, so remember to keep those comments and tweets coming, otherwise Santa might skip your block this year!

For better or worse, the holidays mean spending increased time with family. Between the gluttonous meals, the last minute trips to the mall, and the amateur pageants and recitals, if your family celebrates in December, chances are you’ll be packing in overtime hours with mom, dad, and the rest of the crew in the coming weeks. Extra time with the extended family can be a blessing, but sometimes even we need a break from Grandma’s photo albums and vigorous cheek pinching. If you find yourself suffering from relative-overdose this Christmas, you can find relief in today’s giveaway, featuring classic and contemporary illustrated stories from Mervyn Peake, Maeve Gilmore, and Michael Moorock. The perfection distraction from your next of kin, escape into The Illustrated Gormenghast, Titus Awakes, and The Sunday Books this holiday season.

Author, illustrator, playwright, painter, poet and designer Mervyn Peake is best known for his tour de force gothic epic Gormenghast series, comprised of the novels Titus Groans, Gormenghast, and Titus Alone. Together they trace the life of Titus, lord of Castle Gormenghast and heir to Lord Seupulchrave as he is thrust into a stormy land of dark imagination and complex rituals. Set in a gothic labyrinth of roofs and turrets, cloisters and corridors, stairwells and dungeons, the Gormenghast series is a dreamlike journey through a vividly detailed and richly macabre storyworld. Published one hundred years after their author’s birth (July 9, 1911) The Illustrated Gormenghast Trilogy features one hundred never-befor- seen illustrations by Peake himself.

When Peake died in 1968, he left behind a few tantalizing pages of a fourth book in the Gormenghast series. From this fragment Peake’s widow Maeve Gilmore crafted Titus Awakes, a continuation of the world Peake created, drawing deeply from the unforgettable universe imagined in his original novels. A perfect companion to Peake’s original vision, the story unfolds through a series of picaresque vignettes featuring a motley collection of characters drawn from Peake’s first three books. This lost book of Gormenghast is a moving coda to Peake’s masterwork.

In 1946, Mervyn Peake moved with his family to the Isle of Sark, where every Sunday he would tell his children stories about pirates, shipwrecks, and the Wild West. Drawing on his own boyhood memories, Peake would spontaneously illustrate the stories he told, but he never set down words to go with them. In The Sunday Books fantasy writer and Peake family friend Michael Moorcock has written playful and haunting verse to accompany Peake’s vivid illustrations in a uniquely collaborative project.

On the sixth day of Christmas, Overlook Press gave to me...

It is hard to believe, but with half of December behind us, we are quickly closing in on the holidays. Is all of your holiday shopping complete, neatly wrapped and ribboned underneath the Christmas tree? Or are you still running around dodging crazed shoppers and racking your brain over what to get your second cousin, twice removed?

Overlook Press may not be able to help you track down that last Xbox Kinect, but if you're stumped on what to get your eccentric uncle who wears bedazzled leisure suits to your holiday party and refuses to respond to anything other than "The King," stay tuned. Seriously, we can help.

Today is Day 6 of the Overlook 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, which, like December, is half over! If you are just tuning in, we've already given away five incredible prize packs including books, posters, and t-shirts for True Grit fans, designers, adrenaline junkies, newshounds, and the children at heart. Lucky for you, we still have a haul of exciting goodies ready for wrapping.
Last minute holiday shoppers: sit down, relax, and read on. On this sixth day of Overlook Christmas, we bring you three beautiful books perfect for holiday gifting, including: Elvis in Vegas, New York in the 70s, and Street Knowledge. You're welcome.

Elvis in Vegas by Paul Lichter shines a bright spotlight on one of the most fascinating times in the life and career of Elvis Presley: the Vegas years. Written by the world's leading "Elvisologist," Paul Lichter, it is the only book to focus exclusively on the Vegas years, which ran from the late 1960s to his death in 1977. With 300 full-color and black-and-white photographs--many of which have never been seen--this book is a must have for Presley fans.

New York in the 70s by Allan Tannenbaum is a personal collection of photographs that documents an exciting chapter in New York City's history. Award winning photojournalist Alan Tannenbaum shares his remarkable body of work that serves as a lasting record of that era's resolution of ideas, trends, and movements that had begun in the 1960s. A unique and often unseen portrait of 1970s New York, this book is the perfect gift for anyone who rocked out to The Who, danced at Studio 54, or loved the Lower East Side before it was cool.

Street Knowledge by King Adz is an eye-catching insider's guide to old school graffiti legends, avant-garde street artists, filmmakers, DJs, designers, writers, and poets who have influenced urban culture. From the groundbreaking New York artists of the 1980s to the unique work of modern-day Iranians, this book shows how street culture has penetrated every aspect of modern life. A perfect gift for those who love Bansky or Irvine Welsh and want to know about the cutting-edge talents who have shaped urban cool.

Maybe we’ve just watched too many animated Christmas specials, but December makes us yearn for the simple pleasures of childhood. For today’s giveaway, we’re going to indulge our juvenile sides, and celebrate some of the best children’s books and young adult literature in the Overlook library. Although they make perfect gifts for the kids on your holiday shopping list, if you’re anything like us you’ll want to save these picture books and YA reads for yourself.

Let’s Have a Bite! A Banquet of Beastly Rhymes, written by Robert Forbes and illustrated by Ronald Searle combines mischievous rhymes and delightful illustrations, making it a great gift for poetry lovers of all ages. With over thirty delicious poems and zany illustrations featuring critters large and small (plus an original poster!), this madcap menagerie is sure to satisfy readers aged seven to seventy.

Are you a friend of Freddy? Freddy the Pig is one of history’s most iconic characters in children’s literature, and Freddy the Detective is a classic example of Freddy at his best. Inspired by Sherlock Holmes, Freddy and his partner Mrs. Wiggins the Cow team up to investigate a series of disappearances on the Bean farm. True Grit returns to the Overlook Christmas giveaway list, today as the perfect gift for the adventure-seeking YA reader.
